Day 44 of 60 Days to 60 Years
Resurrection Catholic Parish
1963-2023
We are Resurrection Catholic Parish;
the living body of Christ.
We are called and challenged
to live a prayer-filled life,
heal a broken world,
share our timeless stories,
and act with a servant’s heart.
We are called to be the love of Jesus;
welcoming and loving all God’s people all the time.
60 Years of Memories
Sharing Each Other’s Gift
By Katie Dykes
In the late 1980s, Resurrection sponsored an extended family—two households: a grandmother, nine children, two sets of parents—of 14 Hmong refugees from refugee camps in Thailand. They had only what they could carry in a few bags, spoke little English, and looked bewildered, tired, and frightened.
Parishioners shared household items and clothing, but more importantly, time, helping the families compete forms and paperwork, taking them to medical and social service appointments, teaching them English, and helping parents check the children’s backpacks for notes and homework.
We learned different customs and languages from each other as well as the value of family, friends, and human resilience. The family has grown. Many have completed high school and college. They work full time, know English, and have a farm and a booth at the farmer’s market. Parishioners have attended Hmong naming ceremonies, shaman healing ceremonies, and Hmong funerals.
The family gifted the parish with a beautiful embroidered panj ntaub (pronounce pan dow) telling the story of their migration. It hangs in the offices of the parish staff, down the hall from Fr. Tom Reynebeau’s office.
Katie Dykes has been a member of Resurrection Parish since 1981.
